Do you like cats?

Do you like cats?

Sharon's touching comment at the end of the previous post got me to thinking about cats.

I have never had a cat. They seem a bit too independent to me. Then there is this matter of the necessary room. I don't really know why some cats are so difficult to train while others use a box effectively. Is it the cat or the owner? Is there a differnce between a "house" cat and one that goes outdoors?

I have been in homes where the stench from one cat was so overpowering it made my eyes water, but other homes have several felines with no such problem. Why? This issue alone, is enough to make me avoid getting a cat.

So what is it about cats that make them so popular? Is it their playful swatting of strings and other objects?

Being a handy man I have been in tons of homes with cats. As you said some have the horrendous smell, and others are just fine. But the one cat story that sticks in my mind (actually my nose) the most had nothing to do with urine.

One of my clients had just bought a rental house that needed to be completely remodeled. When we were doing the initial walk-through before he purchased the home we went into the basement to see what it was like. The problem was, it was hard to see the condition because there was literally thousands of house flies. Once we started working on the house the obvious first job was to bug bomb the basement. That took care of the flies, and we thought that was the end of that.

A couple of weeks later we started to re-panel the basement walls as the owner has asked us to do. One of the walls already had drywall up but it had been pretty damaged by water, so we had to remove it. Well, upon removing the drywall we found the source of the flies. Unfortunately a few months prior to us starting work, some kid got what was probably their first lesson in sorrow. Kitty left home and never came back.

Apparently the cat had found some small hole in the outside of the house and climbed through. Unfortunately it didn't know that on the other side of the hole was an eight foot drop in between the foundation wall and the wall framing. Sadly, the poor cat probably slowly starved to death in pitch black.

Prior to that experience I was indifferent to cats. I never minded other people's cats but never had the desire to have my own. Since that 'Cask of Amontillado' moment any black cat reminds me of that gruesome find.

I am on the fence about cats. I have loved one cat in my life and that was Mercedes. We had a special bond that I don't think I would have with any other cat on this planet again. I absolutely hate cat boxes and their hair ball issues. I do however, have a slight yearning to get one because my son Jake absolutely LOVES cats. He is drawn to them by some weird magical power or something. Anytime he sees a cat he repeatedly says kitty in the most adorable voice ever and goes to pet the cat lovingly (not like most 2 1/2 year old kids would). I definitely don't want the hassle of the added smell and fur in my house, but seeing my little guys smile and giggle with joy for the kitty's of the world makes me want to go get one. Becoming a mom has made me realize that something inside you goes crazy when you have kids. There is a wire that switches over or something that will tell you that it is okay to spend all your money on them and buy them ridiculous things that they don't need (or may not even want). I love to see them happy, but is it really worth the hassle of hair balls on my kitchen floor or cat litter boxes that would have to be cleaned every day? In my regular mind, no way, but in my mom mind, definitely yes. That is where I currently sit on the cat issue.

I love cats, I love all animals. It's just an unfortunate fact that our furry family members are often put on the back burner when the children arrive. I suppose I'd love my cat a bit more if he would stop peeing in the stove pans. But he does help keep the mice away so it's a trade off I suppose :)
